SUMMARY: The article is based on the defense research project "Network Enabled Capability (NEC) Knowledge Management of the Army of the Czech Republic (ACR) - MENTAL", which is the first research solution dealing with the theme of knowledge management of the Ministry of Defense. The solution includes an analysis of knowledge in computer science, knowledge approaches and tools; it focuses on promoting NEC issues. The theoretical bases of the project are Topic Maps. The project aims to create a knowledge management system under the ACR NEC control. The creation of the MENTAL commences with architecture processing. MENTAL architecture contains, in accordance with the NATO Architecture Framework (NAF), several views on the knowledge system: an operational view includes a description of functions (operational activities); a system view provides a structure of technology components that will be applied, and the mapping of operational activities on technology components. The technique recommended in NAF are patterns in UML and matrix mapping, all accompanied by a text commentary. Furthermore, potential users are listed and their roles in the system are specified. The procedure of architectures creation is grounded in a suitable methodology.
