NATO is a political and military alliance whose primary goals are the collective defence of its members and the maintenance of a democratic peace in the North Atlantic area. All Allies have an equal say, the Alliance’s decisions must be unanimous and consensual, and its members must respect the basic values that underpin the Alliance.

NATO scientific and technical parts

1. NATO Communications and Information Agency (C & I A)

The NATO Communications and Information Agency – or NCI Agency – acts as NATO’s principal Consultation, Command and Control (C3) deliverer and Communications and Information Systems (CIS) provider. It also provides IT-support to NATO Headquarters, the NATO Command Structure and NATO Agencies:

  • NATO C3 Organisation
  • NATO CIS Services Agency (NCSA)
  • NATO Consultation, Command and Control Agency (NC3A)
  • NATO Headquarters Information and Communication Technology Service (ICTM)

2. NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO)

The NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) acts as NATO’s principal organization for science and technology research. It is composed of a Science and Technology Board (STB), Scientific and Technical Committees and three Executive Bodies; the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS), the Collaboration Support Office (CSO), and the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE):

  • Science and Technology Board
  • Programme Office for Collaborative S&T
  • NATO Undersea Research Centre (NURC)

3. NATO Standardization Agency (NSA) 

NATO Standardization Agency (NSA) - A single, integrated body, composed of military and civilian staff, subordinate to the Council through the NCS, with the authority to со ordinate issues between all fields of standardization. The Joint and Single Service Boards, supported by the NSA, will each act as а ТА, delegated by the MC, for operational standardization, including doctrine. The NSA will set out procedures, planning and execution functions related to standardization for application throughout the Alliance. It is responsible for the preparation of the work for the NCS, NCSREPs and NSSG meetings and will ensure, with its experts in the different fields, centralized со ordination, liaison with and, if required, support to TAs’ Working Groups that develop standards.
