Slovak Military Academy

The military education in Liptov region has a long historical tradition. For more than 60 years young people who have decided to join the armed forces have been educated and trained here. Several military educational instructions have been established. 

The National Council of the Slovak Republic, Act No. 455/2004 dated June 30, 2004, established the Armed Forces Academy of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik as a public university.  The academy is military university. There are no faculties in its structure. It is located in Liptovský Mikuláš, Slovak Republic.

The Rector of the Academy is a statutory official who commands the Armed Forces Academy and acts on its behalf.  The candidate is being appointed to the position of commandant by the President of the Slovak Republic on the recommendation of the Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic and after the Armed Forces Academy’s senate consideration. The Rector is directly subordinated to the Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic and the senate of the Academy. Brigadier General, Assoc. Prof. Dipl. Eng. Ďurkech, Ph.D.  is currently the rector Armed forces academy..  

The academy mission is to provide cadets with university and lifelong education and training, to contribute to a comprehensive improvement of their personality, broaden their knowledge, the creativity and to motivate them for the service in the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic.

Insignia are symbols of historical traditions which express the competence and responsibilities of Armed Forces Academy management. Insignia are gowns, chains and the sword.

The structure of the academy:

  • Department of Management - provides education and research in the area
    of management methods, techniques and tools in the management of socio-economic processes.
  • Department of Electronics - guarantees and ensures the teaching of courses
    in electronics degree programs in electronic systems and also in other degree programs.
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering - provides education in the areas
    of construction, operation, diagnostics, wheeled and tracked vehicles, internal combustion engines, handling equipment, optical and opto-mechanical equipment, instrumentation, maintenance of machinery, equipment, weapons, weapon systems and ammunition, mechanical load structures, thermal and hydraulic processes, evaluation of materials, issues of material engineering, modern and intelligent materials and process simulation load.
  • Department of Computer Science - comprehensively covers the field of computing, information and communication technologies as well as in mathematics research
    and education.
  • Department of Social Sciences and Languages - significantly contributes
    to the preparation of armed forces of the Slovak Republic with emphasis on recruiting, developing knowledge of social, intellectual habits, abilities and skills of students and military professionals with a focus on their management, education and language skills
  • Department of Physical Education and Sport - provides teaching students, staff physical education, physical education, sports and leisure activities for all members
    of the academy.
  • Security and Department of Defence - is a fundamental university teaching and research centre for the area of the national academy, international security and military art.
  • Centre for education is one of the centres of the academy. Provides lifelong education and training of professional soldiers, employees Ministry of Defence and other government departments.

  • 3rd  level of university studies
