The Romanian Government’s Decision No. 550, dated May, 17th, 1990, states that the Command and Staff Faculties within the Military Academy train student officers to become commanders and staff officers at the tactical and operational echelons and in the logistical command system of the Armed Forces, as well as for other domestic and foreign beneficiaries.
Moreover, Art. 14 of the aforementioned Decision acknowledges the Military Academy’s right to conduct development courses in the faculties for military and civilian experts, to get the Doctor’s degree (PhD) in the branch of Military Science, in keeping with the national legal provisions in force.
Starting from 1991 and based on the Romanian Government’s Decision No. 305, dated April, 23rd, 1991, the name of the institution was changed into the Higher Military Studies Academy. The legal status of the Command and Staff Faculties was reconfirmed by the Romanian Government’s Decision No. 611, dated September, 30th, 1992. Articles 1 through 9 of this Decison define the status and missions of the Higher Military Studies Academy and of the faculties within it. On September, 7th, 1994, the Defense Minister approved “The Post-Graduate Military Higher Education Concept”, No. SA 2239, according to which the Higher Military Studies Academy conducts post-graduate military higher education studies (called ‘Bachelor’s Degree studies’ during the transition period), organized by the Faculty, in the following major academic areas:
- Army;
- Air Force and Air Defense;
- Navy;
- Logistics;
- Finance and Economics.
By force of the Education Law No. 1/2011, starting from the academic year 2011-2012 the faculty has the following structure:
- the Land Forces Department;
- the Air Force, Navy and Military Physical Training Department;
- the Logistics, Finance and Accounting Department;
- the Military Information Systems and Defense Intelligence Department;
- the Foreign Language Department.
